- Tackling bedeutet beim Fußball, einen Gegner robust, aber fair vom Ball zu trennen; dazu gehört der Grätschschritt oder das gezielte Rutschen über das Spielfeld (engl. sliding tackling), um den Ball zu blockieren, zur Seite wegzuspitzeln oder ihn dem ballführenden Gegenspieler regelkonform abzunehmen. Bei der Sporthallen-Variante Futsal werden Tacklings am Mann grundsätzlich als Foul gewertet. Da die heutigen Fußballregeln zum größten Teil in England entwickelt wurden, sind viele Begriffe aus dem Englischen in den deutschen Fußball eingewandert. So neben Tackling, die Begriffe Pressing und Forechecking, Fair Play oder Kick and Rush.

Nelle statistiche della NFL i tackles sono divisi in solo, quando viene eseguito da un singolo giocatore, ed in assist quando viene eseguito da più giocatori. La somma di entrambi da il totale dei tackles fatti in partita. Il termine si può utilizzare anche per indicare il ruolo di alcuni giocatori, esistono infatti gli offensive tackles e i defensive tackles.
