Juni 1911 durch den Earl of Dudley, dem damaligen Generalgouverneur, eröffnet. Sie entstand auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Gehöftes Duntroon, das nach dem Schloss Duntrune Castle in Argyll benannt ist. Erster Kommandant war der spätere General William Throsby Bridges. Er hatte das Gelände selbst ausgewählt und baute die Institution nach dem Vorbild der US-Militärakademie in West Point auf.

The College's motto is Doctrina Vim Promovet, which translates to Learning Promotes Strength. It was taken from Horace, Book 4, Ode 4 and was suggested by Professor T.G. Tucker of Melbourne University.
