Ziel der Ausbildung ist es, Kadetten und andere ausgewählte Kandidaten auf eine Karriere als Berufsoffizier vorzubereiten. Die Einrichtung wurde am 27. Juni 1911 durch den Earl of Dudley, dem damaligen Generalgouverneur, eröffnet. Sie entstand auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Gehöftes Duntroon, das nach dem Schloss Duntrune Castle in Argyll benannt ist. Erster Kommandant war der spätere General William Throsby Bridges. Er hatte das Gelände selbst ausgewählt und baute die Institution nach dem Vorbild der US-Militärakademie in West Point auf.
