Hij was de tweede zoon van Frans van Saksen-Coburg-Saalfeld en daarmee een jongere broer van Ernst I van Saksen-Coburg en Gotha en oudere broer van Leopold I van België. Hij nam in 1791 als tweede luitenant dienst in het leger van Oostenrijk, werd luitenant-veldmaarschalk en leider van een huzarenregiment. Als zodanig streed hij in de veldslagen van 1809 en 1812/1813 en onderscheidde zich met name in de Slag bij Kulm. Op 2 januari 1816 huwde hij de steenrijke prinses Antonia Koháry (1797-1862), dochter van de laatste vorst Koháry. Om haar te kunnen trouwen had hij zich tot het katholicisme moeten bekeren, daarmee de katholieke linie van het huis Saksen-Coburg en Gotha stichtend. Hij werd in 1827 in de Hongaarse adel opgenomen en stierf op 27 augustus 1851 te Wenen.
