Ice Age is a 2002 American computer-animated film created by Blue Sky Studios and released by 20th Century Fox in 2002. It was directed by Carlos Saldanha and Chris Wedge from a story by Michael J. Wilson. The story follows three Paleolithical mammals attempting to deliver a lost baby human back to their parents. The film was originally to be directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, and produced in 2D by Fox Animation Studios, but the rise of CGI animation and the failure of Titan A.E.

Aufgrund der kommerziellen Flops der mit traditioneller Zeichentricktechnik hergestellten Filme Anastasia und Titan A.E. sowie der Erfolge der computeranimierten Pixar-Produktionen wurde Ice Age dann aber von Blue Sky Studios komplett computeranimiert umgesetzt. Hierfür wurde die Zahl der Mitarbeiter im Produktionsstudio kurzfristig von rund 65 auf mehr als 170 erhöht. Diese arbeiteten fast zwei Jahre an der Umsetzung, bevor ein Großteil wieder gekündigt wurde. Eine Vielzahl verschiedener Trailer und weiterer Werbemaßnahmen für Internet und Kino steigerten die Gesamtproduktionskosten auf 75 Millionen US-Dollar. Nach dem finanziellen Erfolg des Films kam 2006 die Fortsetzung Ice Age 2: Jetzt taut’s und 2009 Ice Age 3: Die Dinosaurier sind los in die Kinos.
